“All That Breathes” Shortlisted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for Best Documentary

Win follows awards for Best Documentary at IDA and Best Documentary Feature at the Gotham Awards

December 21 (Chevy Chase, MD)- HHMI Tangled Bank Studios in association with Rise Films, Kiterabbit Films, Sideshow, Submarine Deluxe and HBO Documentary Films, is honored to announce that “All That Breathes,” the first film to win Best Documentary at Sundance and Cannes, has been included on The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ shortlist for the 95th Academy Awards in the Documentary Feature category.

Since its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, the poignant story and breathtaking cinematography of “All That Breathes” has captivated audiences around the world. Recently, it added Best Feature Documentary, Best Director, Best Editing, and the special Pare Lorentz awards from the International Documentary Association to its long list of accolades, which includes the London Film Festival Grierson Award, Best Documentary from the Gotham Film & Media Institute, a Producers Guild of America nomination for Outstanding Producer, was included on the shortlist at DOC NYC and half a dozen Cinema Eye Honors nominations including Outstanding Nonfiction Feature.

Set in the polluted city of New Delhi, the film’s moving story follows Nadeem and Saud, two brothers living in a working-class Muslim neighborhood, who have devoted their lives to a bird-the black kite. From the basement of their family business, they rescue tens of thousands of these mesmeric creatures that drop daily from the thick grey skies, and dream of someday building a proper wildlife hospital. As environmental toxicity and civil unrest escalate in New Delhi, the bond between this Muslim family and the neglected kite forms a poignant chronicle of the city’s collapsing ecology and rising social tension.

“We are thankful to the Academy for recognizing the caliber of the storytelling and filmmaking and are honored to share this moment with Shaunak and this team of talented filmmakers,” said Head of HHMI Tangled Bank Studios Sean B. Carroll. “It has been rewarding to see the film’s inspirational story strike such a strong chord with so many different audiences.”

Garnering attention from the New York Times, which selected it as a Critics’ Pick, the Los Angeles Times, which called the film “the most beautifully realized documentary in recent memory,” The Guardian, which said it was a “complex, thoughtful, beautifully realized film,” and many more, “All That Breathes” has wrapped up its premiere year on dozens of Best of Year lists including Time Magazine, Vogue, Vox, Indie Wire, Slate, and the LA Times.

“All That Breathes” is one of 15 films selected for the Academy’s shortlist for documentaries. The 5 documentary nominees for the 95th Academy Awards will be announced January 24.
