Marjee Chmiel

Director of Evaluation

Marjee Chmiel works with HHMI Tangled Bank Studios and HHMI BioInteractive on evaluation efforts, organizational learning, and effective philanthropy across a variety of programs and initiatives. She is a social science researcher with expertise in science education, educational media, and research and evaluation methods.

Prior to joining HHMI Tangled Bank Studios, Chmiel directed development of award-winning, multi-media science education content, with the Smithsonian Institution, National Geographic, and PBS. She has published and spoken extensively on the topic of science education media. Her talks have ranged from the design of digital games for science museums at South by Southwest EDU to addressing challenges of curriculum design to the Ministry of Education in Kuala Lumpur, where members of the audience could place her Chicago accent even from 8,000 miles away. Chmiel earned her doctorate at George Mason University in research and evaluation, and her Master of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees at Marquette University. Chmiel was a Spencer Education Fellow and recently served as a Fulbright Specialist in beautiful Bandung, Indonesia. She also serves as an adjunct professor with University of Maryland’s School of Information where she teaches courses in research and evaluation.
