Rewilding Documentary to Premiere in the U.S. at the Hamptons International Film Festival This October

August 31, 2023 - HHMI Tangled Bank Studios and PASSION PICTURES today announced their feature documentary Wilding will make its World Premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on October 6th. The film will then travel to the Hamptons International Film Festival to make its North American debut in the Compassion, Justice and Animal Rights Signature Program on October 11th.

Based on Isabella Tree’s best-selling book by the same title, Wilding tells the story of a young couple that bets on nature for the future of their failing, four-hundred-year-old estate. The pair battle entrenched tradition as they rip down fences and set the land back to its natural state, entrusting its recovery to a motley mix of animals both tame and wild. It is the beginning of a grand experiment that will become one of the most significant rewilding projects in Europe.

“We are so thrilled to launch this important film at the BFI London Film Festival in the UK, and the Hamptons International Film Festival in the U.S.,” said Wilding’s Director, David Allen. “In a world marked by so many wounds it’s rare as a director to get the chance to tell a compelling human story that also contains such a vital message about the world around us. Issy and Charlie’s unlikely journey to repair their failing farm is precisely that: an exhilarating love story about nature’s remarkable ability to heal a world that we increasingly recognise as broken in so many ways.”

“The Wilding team is deeply honoured by the selection of the film at these two prestigious festivals,” said Head of HHMI Tangled Bank Studios, Sean B. Carroll. “The rewilding of the Knepp Estate is both a breath-taking ecological achievement and a marvellous, inspiring story. We are so proud to help bring it to the screen with our remarkably talented partners at Passion Pictures.”

Wilding is produced by three-time Oscar-winning production company PASSION PICTURES; partnered with Emmy and Peabody Award-winning HHMI Tangled Bank Studios whose most recent film, All That Breathes, won best documentary at Sundance, Cannes, and the BFI London Film Festival and was nominated for the Best Documentary Feature Academy Award. This is the third film co-produced by these two studios, following the Emmy Award-winning film The Serengeti Rules (2018), and the Emmy-nominated My Garden of a Thousand Bees (2021), which won the Golden Panda Award at Wildscreen.

The film is directed by five-time Emmy Award-winning David Allen, produced by Gaby Bastyra, and photographed by multi-BAFTA & Emmy Award-winning cinematographers Tim Cragg and Simon de Glanville.

Wilding’s musical score is composed by Biggi Hilmars and Grammy-nominated Jon Hopkins, cited by The New Yorker as “one of the most celebrated electronic musicians of his generation.”
