SCISHOW FIELD TRIPS TAKE AUDIENCES TO DUKE AND UNC TO MEET RESEARCHERS TACKLING FUNGAL THREATS, MENTAL ILLNESS AND PSYCHEDELIC MEDICINE
CHEVY CHASE, Md., August 21, 2026 – HHMI Tangled Bank Studios and Complexly are proud to announce the release of the second season of SciShow Field Trips, the series that takes the popular science education channel SciShow out of the studio and on location to visit working science labs. This round of three new episodes travels to North Carolina's Research Triangle, where host Madelyn Leembruggen meets researchers at Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The episodes are now available on the SciShow YouTube channel:
- The Fungus You Should Actually Be Worried About: SciShow visits Dr. Asiya Gusa's lab at Duke University, where researchers study Cryptococcus, a fungus that has been adapting to survive at higher temperatures as the planet warms.
- Is the Secret to Treating Schizophrenia in… Engineering?: The SciShow team visits Dr. Kafui Dzirasa's lab, also at Duke University, where researchers are studying electrical patterns across the entire brain in search of new mental illness treatments.
- LSD May Lead to a New Kind of Medicine: The series heads to Dr. Bryan Roth's lab at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which has developed new molecules that may offer the therapeutic benefits of psychedelics without the hallucinogenic side effects that have limited their use in treating mental illness.
